معمولاً با نقدهای علمی، مقالات نظری مفسران، بیانیه‌های سیاستمداران جهان و عناصر فرهنگ عامه مواجه می‌شویم که نیجریه یا نیجریه‌ای را با دیدی منفی نشان می‌دهند. از انتقاد دونالد ترامپ از نیجریه در سال 2018 (به دلیل عدم بازگشت به "خانه های خود") تا تمایل کامرونی ها به دیدن نیجریه ها به عنوان "سلطه جو" و "مهاجم" در سرزمین مادری خود، مسلماً ملیت نیجریه همیشه در کشورهای مختلف به خوبی درک نشده است. با این حال، بسیاری از بازنمایی های غم انگیز نیجریه بر اساس تحقیقات تجربی پایه گذاری نشده اند. به عبارت دیگر، اکثر ناظران - از جمله محققان - صرفاً به فرضیات هشداردهنده و یا تئوری‌ها و منطق‌های ضعیفی وابسته هستند تا نیجریه را به عنوان سرزمین منفی‌های مختلف توصیف کنند. چنین ناظرانی اغلب از تلاش کافی برای ارائه شواهد ملموس برای حمایت از ادعاهای خود کوتاهی می کنند. در این مقاله، بررسی انتقادی ادبیات برای ارزیابی میزانی که بحث در مورد بحران تصویر نیجریه بر پایه‌های تجربی پایه‌گذاری شده است، استفاده می‌شود. هفت ویژگی کلیدی نیجریه در بررسی در نظر گرفته شده است: (1) محصول نیجریه، (2) نیجریه به عنوان یک کشور (iii) نیجریه به عنوان یک مردم [یعنی فرهنگ های نیجریه]، (IV) دولت نیجریه، (v) پلیس نیجریه، (vi) نیجریه به عنوان یک مقصد گردشگری (vii) بیمارستان های نیجریه و (viii) مدارس نیجریه.
